PLOUGHING CHMPIONSHIPS
When local Ploughing Committee Chairman Jimmy
McCarthy confirmed that the National Ploughing Championship was coming to
Carrigtwohill in 1992 everyone put their shoulder to the wheel to ensure
its success, and it was. It became o tough challenge to organise what has
become the biggest trade and agriculture show in Europe. The tented
village with over 600 stands and many more side shows took shape about 1
mile east of Carrigtwohill on the north side of the dual carriageway.
Offically opened on Tuesday 29th September 1992 by Rev. Canon J. Ahern
with Anna May McHugh Managing Director N.P.G. in lovely sunny weather, the
event attracted about 60,000 people on the first day with nearly the same
number on each of the next two subsequent days. Every club and association
in the village were involved in some way towards ensuring its success and
the social aspect gave great enjoyment to young and old. The Community
Hall was used for meetings and other activities finishing off with all
night dances on each night of the championships.
